Pickaxe enchantments in Minecraft come down to one exclusive choice — Fortune or Silk Touch — and the correct answer is to stop choosing. The endgame is two pickaxes with the same core and different jobs.
Here are the exact numbers on Java 26.2, what Fortune does and doesn't multiply, and the ore-banking strategy that makes Silk Touch pay twice.
Every pickaxe enchantment at a glance
| Enchantment | Max | What it does | From the table? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Efficiency | V | Mining speed per level; V + Haste II beacon instamines stone | Up to IV typical; V via anvil |
| Fortune | III | Multiplies ore drops — ≈2.2× diamonds at III, max 4 | Yes |
| Silk Touch | I | Drops the block itself (excl. Fortune) | Yes |
| Unbreaking | III | ≈4× durability — ~6,000 blocks on netherite | Yes |
| Mending | I | XP from the ores you mine repairs the pick as you go | No — trading, fishing, loot |
The one decision: Fortune or Silk Touch
They can't share a pickaxe, and they answer different questions. Fortune III answers "how many diamonds?": about 2.2× on average, up to 4 per ore, and the same multiplication on coal, redstone, lapis, emerald, amethyst clusters, and raw iron, gold, and copper. Silk Touch answers "can I keep the block?": glass and ice move intact, glowstone doesn't shatter, and an ender chest comes home as an ender chest instead of 8 obsidian.
The strategy that beats both: if you find diamonds before you own Fortune, mine them with Silk Touch and store the ore blocks. They break later — under Fortune III, with the multiplier — so early-game caves pay endgame rates. Ore in a chest is a savings account.
Efficiency V and the instamine line
Efficiency multiplies mining speed steeply enough that the interesting threshold is at the top: Efficiency V on a netherite pickaxe with a Haste II beacon breaks stone the tick you touch it. That's branch mining at walking speed. Without the beacon, Efficiency V still roughly halves every mining session; there is no build that skips it.
Unbreaking + Mending: the pickaxe that never dies
A netherite pick has 2,031 durability; Unbreaking III stretches it toward ~8,000 block breaks, and Mending closes the loop — coal, redstone, and lapis drop XP as you mine, so the tool repairs itself mid-session. This pair is why the endgame pickaxe is a permanent item, not a consumable.
Common mistakes
- Breaking diamond ore "just this once" without Fortune. That block was worth 2.2 diamonds; it paid 1.
- Silk Touch on ancient debris runs. Debris always drops itself — the slot does nothing in the nether.
- Expecting Silk Touch to move spawners. It never has; spawners break into nothing.
- One pickaxe for everything. The Fortune/Silk exclusivity is a two-pickaxe tax — pay it once and stop re-enchanting.
